U.S. President Joe Biden followed his US$1.9-trillion pandemic rescue plan with a mammoth US$2-trillion expenditure on infrastructure. He called the latter an investment “unlike anything we’ve seen or done since we built the Interstate Highway System and the Space Race decades ago.”
He’s not exaggerating. Seizing the opportunity provided by the alarm of the pandemic, he’s moving his country into a bold new phase of big-government activism that channels a good swath of Canadian liberalism.
In putting together the infrastructure plan, Biden officials consulted often with Canada’s Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna and her team.
Advocates for universal broadband access and internet affordability are lauding Pres. Biden’s American Jobs Plan.
They praise the plan for recognizing the important of internet access, pointing out that broadband has become as necessary as electricity. The push for more access to affordable internet comes as families across the United States are having to adjust to remote work and learning due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
On Mar. 31, the Biden Administration announced the American Jobs Plan, a $2 trillion jobs, infrastructure and green energy proposal meant to reshape the U.S. economy. In his announcement, Biden said the plan would create “the most resilient, innovative economy in the world,” through multiple projects intended to upgrade the nation’s infrastructure and create millions of jobs.
Over a month ago, I emailed the White House advising President Biden that as a conservative there were few things we would agree on, but one thing we could agree on is our love of trains. Â
So, I was pleased to see that $80 billion of the proposed infrastructure bill are slated for Amtrak upgrades and extension of several routes.
It appears while we as a superpower are involved worldwide as the military and political need arises, at the same time, our infrastructure is crumbling. Â
A young junior officer named Eisenhower, in charge of moving a military convoy on a training mission across the U.S., saw first-hand the challenges because of poor roads. When he was Supreme Allied Commander during World War II, he saw the benefits of the Autobahn highway system in Germany.
