Comments: Older African Americans are not a monolithic group with uniform opinions or experiences. African Americans born in 1964, for example, the year the Civil Rights Act passed, will turn 57 years old this year. In contrast, African Americans who are 75 or older were already 18 years old when the landmark legislation was signed into law. On the other hand, those who are 45 and older were born in 1976. For these Generation X Americans, Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights marches were historic events, rather than events that occurred during their lifetime. Each of these cohorts entered the world at a different point, but their experiences are linked and, unfortunately, in many ways very similar.
