Tourists flout COVID-19 norms in Kasauli and Dharamshala, government issues warning Tourists are gathered in large crowds without wearing masks amid the scare of a third wave of COVID-19 in the country Himachal Pradesh | ANI Updated: Jul 11, 2021, 08:01 AM IST Since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in Himachal Pradesh on June 14 last month, tourists have been rushing to the hills to get some respite from the heatwave in north India and a break from their mundane lives.  Recently, what created concern was when a large number of tourists were seen violating covid norms in Kasauli and Dharamshala amid the scare of new variants popping up every day and creating a  threat for the third wave.

New Delhi: As tourists are rushing to hill stations in order to get some respite from heatwave in north India, gross violation of COVID-19 appropriate behaviour by these visitors has generated a cause of concern for the authorities. A large number of tourists have thronged Himachal Pradesh’s Kasauli and Dharamshala amid threat of a possible third coronavirus wave.  As locals are happy with getting some business, it has become a worrisome concern for the authorities.

With Covid norms relaxed in Himachal Pradesh, huge crowds thronged the popular tourist destination, causing several traffic jams and congestion. Locals are hopeful for their businesses after suffering losses from the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. Satish Kumar, a junior engineer in Kasauli told ANI that it is especially crowded during the weekends and the police are quite active in issuing fines on people who flout COVID-19 norms.

Jaswant Singh Rajput, president of Aurangabad Tourism Development Foundation urged the state government to implement tax incentives in order to mitigate the damage caused to the sector. We demand tax incentive from State govt to overcome the financial losses, he said. Speaking to ANI, Jairam Thakur said, We are concerned about the number of tourists coming to the State. Tourists are welcome here but I appeal to them to follow COVID19 norms. We need to save the tourism industry also. I held a virtual meeting with districts officials and directed them to monitor and regulate the crowd. COVID19 is not over yet. Hotels are being asked to follow SOPs, he added.
