Don t despair, liberals - The Boston Globe

Don’t despair, liberals Yes, the filibuster stands in the way of climate action and gun control and everything else you hold dear. But there may be another path. By David Scharfenberg Globe Staff,Updated May 16, 2021, 1 hour ago Email to a Friend American liberalism is in a state of high anxiety. Democrats hold slim majorities in both houses of Congress. And the midterm elections, which typically don’t go well for the president’s party, will be upon us before long. That means time is running short to pass one of the most sweeping and consequential political agendas in modern American history.

Biden administration to resume border wall construction after pressure from locals, politicians

Townhall Media/Julio Rosas Joe Biden came into office and immediately did away with as much of Trump’s border policies as possible. The problem with his ham-handed rushed actions is that it left some critical projects in the lurch. He suspended all border wall construction and now local residents in the Rio Grande Valley have pressured him to adjust his decision. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will restart wall construction in the Rio Grande Valley, including repairs. A concrete levee wall will go up for a 13.4-mile stretch. Repairs are set to begin in six weeks in order to prevent flooding. The levee wall will be fitted with safety barriers in six to nine months. The USACE was quick to clarify the wall isn’t being expanded and this will only repair the Rio Grande flood levee for the time being. Top Republicans push government watchdog to force Biden to build border wall

Print this article Two senior Senate Republicans accused President Joe Biden of violating the law by holding up border wall construction that Congress specifically approved under the Trump administration, and they are pushing a government watchdog to force the White House s hand. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, the top Republican on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, and Vice Chairman Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama pushed Wednesday for the Government Accountability Office to intervene on the pot of money that Congress allocated for wall construction at the U.S.-Mexico border. Capito, along with 40 Republican senators, wrote GAO Comptroller Gene Dodaro in March, stating that Biden violated the Impoundment Control Act by suspending all Department of Homeland Security border wall projects without providing legal justification.

Biden cancels border wall construction contracts

Townhall Media/Julio Rosas Joe Biden signed an executive order during his first day in office that put a halt to new border wall construction. He froze the money for border wall construction projects and terminated Trump’s national emergency declaration on the southern border. Steps are being taken now to further move the process along. The Department of Defense announced Friday that the Biden administration has canceled further construction of the wall on the southern border. The photo above shows a gap in the border wall system in McAllen, Texas left as it is because of Biden’s order in January. The funding that Trump moved from the military budget is being sent back to the Pentagon. Military construction projects will receive the money instead of the border wall. A spokesman for the Pentagon presented the announcement as a matter of supporting the military.
