He bought several properties in Powhatan County, including Belmead, where he built a mansion overlooking the James River to serve as his family home. By 1860 Cocke owned more than 27,000 acres of land and more than 610 slaves in the two states and reckoned his net worth at more than $1,000,000. His widely scattered plantations required management through overseers, and he compiled detailed manuals for directing the work. Cocke gained renown as a leading advocate of agricultural interests. He built an extensive library of more than 600 titles, including a wide array of volumes on agriculture and plantation management. Apr 16, 2021 ALANSON, Mich. W. Ford Kaufman, 66, of The Shores on Crooked Lake, passed away on April 2 after a life lived gracefully with MS. Ford was born on August 5, 1954 in Gladstone, Mich. He was a 1972 graduate of Gladstone High School and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology from Western Michigan University, which led to his work as a behavioral psychologist. Ford loved sports, from his high school track relay team and later Murph’s Fast-Pitch Baseball Team, about which he had many fond memories. While still able, he fished for walleye and salmon with brother Mike (Mio) and friends on Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay. Ford was one of Mio’s Boys Basketball’s biggest fans – traveling from Kalamazoo for almost every single game when they were undefeated and State Champions in 1989.

For after flowery oratory, trimmed with a few slightly aromatic quips, the Senate passed a resolution by Senator Mead Norton of Shawnee, so designating the Pottawatomie County seat on Jan. 14, 1941. Sponsor Norton offered as one argument for passage of the resolution this statement: “My district doesn’t have much in the way of a senator, and you ought to do a little something for it.” Senator Joe Thompson of Ardmore objected to the resolution on the grounds that in the heart of the Arbuckles, there was more red bud “than in all of Pottawatomie County.” Senator Virgil Stokes of Marietta wanted consideration postponed because “I’ve been besieged by groups who want to share in the designation.”
