During this year’s Oscars ceremony, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award had two recipients for the first time ever. Tyler Perry received the award for his work helping those both within the film community and outside of it, specifically Black activists and Black people living in Atlanta.
The other recipient of the award was the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF), which was set up a century ago to help people from the entertainment industry who were suffering from economic hardship.
While Viola Davis presented Perry with his award, Bryan Cranston spoke at length about the work being done by the MPTF. During his speech, he said that he had a special, personal connection to the organization: “When my mother, Peggy, a former actress, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the MPTF offered her a caring and loving home for her final years, as well as her last sweet romance.”

Nomadland struck gold at the 2021 Oscars on Sunday as it was crowned Best Picture, while filmmaker Chloe Zhao made history as Best Director.
Chinese-born Zhao became the first woman of colour to be named Best Director, and just the second female in Academy Awards history to take home the title, 11 years after Kathryn Bigelow was feted for The Hurt Locker. The drama also earned Frances McDormand her third Best Actress Oscar. Meanwhile, Sir Anthony Hopkins became the oldest person to ever win an Academy Award - the 83 year old was saluted as Best Actor for The Father, which picked up a second win for Best Adapted Screenplay.

LOS ANGELES A surreal 93rd Academy Awards, a stage show broadcast on television about films mostly distributed on the internet, got underway Sunday with Regina King, a former Oscar winner and the director of “One Night in Miami,” strutting into a supper-club set.
“It has been quite a year, and we are still smack dab in the middle of it,” she said solemnly, referencing the pandemic and the guilty verdict in the George Floyd murder trial. “Our love of movies helped to get us through.”
With very little additional preamble signaling a low-key, stripped-down-to-the-essentials ceremony, the snoozy opposite of the typical pomp and circumstance Oscar statuettes began to get handed out. Emerald Fennell, a first-time nominee, won best original screenplay for “Promising Young Woman,” a startling revenge drama. The last woman to win solo in the category had been Diablo Cody (“Juno”) in 2007.
