The latest statewide total of COVID-19 cases is 183,318 as of Jan. 19. There have been 59 COVID-19-related deaths in Nebraska reported in the last seven days, for a total of 1,850. To date, a total of 127,221 Nebraskans testing positive for COVID-19 have recovered.
While still elevated, COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to come down, with Nebraska hospitals caring for an average of 444 COVID-19 patients a day over the last seven days. Averages in prior weeks were 481, 522, and 528 COVID-19 patients.
The daily average of new positive cases in the last week was 781, compared to 948 daily cases last week, and 1,036 and 780 cases a day in recent weeks.

McCOOK, Neb. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department is following the rollout plan for COVID vaccinations as directed by Nebraskas governor and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The rollout plan is divided into phases, and the first phase has 3 sections called 1A, 1B, and 1C. Within each of the phases, the categories are prioritized and broken down even further into tiers. Tier 1 has priority over Tier 2, and so on. Vaccinations must be given to specific occupations or age groups as dictated by the rollout plan; SWNPHD is not able to change when people in any occupation or other categories receive the vaccine. Changes may happen at the state or federal level.

Gov. Pete Ricketts eliminated almost all COVID-19 restrictions on Dec. 24 as statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations fell below 15% of staffed hospital beds.
Numerous local business owners said the changes would not make a big difference, though some said it is possible the loosening of restrictions could bring more people into their establishments.
COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations locally and statewide have fallen, but are still above safe levels, according to the East-Central District Health Departmentâs Dec. 18 situation update. It is not clear if that had changed by the end of December.
