3 hours ago President, Mokgweetsi Masisi has pointed out the need to invest in social protection systems and occupational health and safety. When delivering his speech on commemoration of International Labour Day, Masisi said that although the roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines has renewed hope for economic recovery as projections indicate a robust economic recovery for the second half of 2021, one of biggest lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic is that, there is a critical need to invest in social protection systems and occupational health and safety. “To that effect, through the Botswana Decent Work Country Programme (BDWCP), work has commenced to develop a National Occupational Health and Safety Policy to enhance the existing social protection provisions.”

The IMF which has for a long time called government to reduce the wage bill again reiterated its stance on civil service reform must be priority when it concluded 2021 Article IV mission to Botswana last week. IMF, a Bretton Woods Institution, has recommended to government that fiscal reforms are needed and they include the reform of the civil service as well as rationalization of parastatals.

The Botswana Sectors of Educators trade Union (BOSETU) notes that the 2021/2022 budget proposals were made under very challenging times due to the COVID 19 pandemic. As a trade union we note further, that Botswana economy and the entire world was and still is adjusting and responding to the biggest shock of this century, which is COVID-19. We have no doubt as a trade union that, the pandemic has had many socio – economic impacts that include low economic to negative growth of most sectors of the economy, increased rates of unemployment especially for the youth, poverty and balance of payment decline. We note further that it is on record that Botswana’s economy has declined by almost 25 percent in period of March to June 2020, which period covers the longest national lockdown in April 2020.
