Malaysians should prepare for the worst, according to a leading health official, after a record 7289 new cases of coronavirus were reported by the Health Ministry in a day. Our daily Covid-19 cases are following an exponential trend, warned ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah on Tuesday.
The high comes a day after a daily death toll record of 61 was reported, taking the total to 2309, and only two days after the highest previous single-day case number. The ministry was reporting around 1000 cases a day at the start of last month.

COVID-19 cases are rising in some Southeast Asian nations, as Malaysia and Thailand on Wednesday reported record high virus-related deaths amid the spread of highly contagious variants in the region.
Malaysia on Wednesday logged its highest number of daily new COVID-19 infections since Jan. 31, the Philippines is bracing for a potential surge in cases after the double mutant Indian strain was discovered there a day earlier, and Thailand’s Department of Corrections said almost 3,000 inmates in two prisons tested positive.
“The Department of Corrections tested for COVID-19 among all officials and inmates and found 1,040 infected in the Women s Correctional Institution and 1,795 in the Bangkok Remand Prison,” the department’s press statement said.

Kuala Lumpur, May 11 : Malaysia will extend its movement control order (MCO) across the country till June to curb the recent Covid-19 resurgence, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.
The restrictions will take effect from Wednesday to June 7, Xinhua news agency quoted Muhyiddin as saying in a statement on Monday.
He added that the measures were necessary due to the surge in fresh cases nationwide, especially in the wake of new variants and poor public discipline in following standard operating procedures (SOP).
