Researchers from the University of Glasgow have contributed their expertise to a new report on how nature-based solutions could help nations mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Professor Nick Hanley and Professor Larissa Naylor are among the authors of Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change, People and Biodiversity, a briefing paper released by the COP26 Universities Network.
The Network is a growing group of more than 50 UK-based universities and research institutes working together to help deliver an ambitious outcome at the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow and beyond.
The new report says as societies face the triple challenge of enhancing human wellbeing, avoiding dangerous climate change, and protecting remaining biodiversity, increasingly there are calls to end siloed thinking and design solutions that simultaneously address each of these problems.
Shell Ukraine on social media
Tackling climate change is the biggest challenge the world faces today.
We have recently announced our Energy Transition Strategy, which describes Shell’s approach to becoming a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, in step with society’s progress towards the goal of the UN Paris Agreement on climate change.
In February 2021, we launched our Powering Progress strategy to accelerate the transition of our business, including targets to reduce the carbon intensity of energy products we sell – by 6-8% by 2023, 20% by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 100% by 2050. We have worked to embed this sustainability ambition into our strategy, our business processes and decision-making.

London [UK], April 29 (ANI): A new report highlights planting urban trees, increasing community green spaces, utilising brownfield sites and building sustainable drainage systems as effective nature-based solutions in cities to improve wellbeing, bring economic benefit, increase biodiversity and fight climate change.
These conclusions, released today (29 April), form part of the Nature-based Solutions report produced by the British Ecological Society which will be published in full on the 12th May. The report will offer, for the first time, a complete assessment of the potential of nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change and benefit biodiversity in the UK.
Special event G20/UNEP – Resilient, Smart and Sustainable Cities: The Power of Nature-based Solutions
The event highlighted the multiple benefits of implementing Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in cities, and particularly their contribution to building resilience to climate change while contributing to climate mitigation. A wealth of urban experiments is underway across G20 countries, demonstrating that NbS – adapted to local circumstances – can work in all contexts. To multiply positive experiences, further quantification of the range of benefits, and increasing progress monitoring, are needed, as well as the integration of NbS in planning processes and technical standards for infrastructure, the development of innovative business and finance models and smooth multi-level governance.
