In June 1991, Mount Pinatubo, a volcanic peak on the Philippine Island of Luzon, literally blew its top. It was the second-most powerful volcanic eruption of the 20th century, ten times stronger than Mount Saint Helens, and its effects were devastating. Lava and ash spewed into the surrounding environment in the Zambales Mountains, pooling in layers up to 600 feet thick in the valleys. Following the eruption, powerful typhoons and monsoon rains triggered landslides and ash flows that continued for many months. Eight hundred people lost their lives, and the lush forests that covered the mountain prior to the eruption were destroyed or severely damaged. In recent years, scientists returned to the region to survey the surviving mammal populations, and in a new paper in the Philippine Journal of Science, the team announced the rediscovery of a species of mouse that had long been feared to be extinct.
There’s a reason so many people move here from elsewhere and thousands of people visit each winter: Park City is a snow lover’s paradise. As those familiar with everything our town offers this time of year can attest, you do not need to leave Summit County’s borders for an unforgettable ski vacation or adventure.
But those who have the itch to explore will discover winter magic outside of Park City, too. Here are a few destinations
worth checking out.
Midway
Just a short drive from Park City to the south sits the charming town of Midway, which was founded by Swiss families in the 1800s and still bears the markings of its origins in Swiss-styled architecture. One of the most popular attractions is the Ice Castles, featuring massive man-made ice towers and caverns it’s a great way to spend a winter’s evening with the family. Nearby is a large outdoor ice skating rink that operates throughout the winter, and Midway also has many inviting restaurants

With holiday events canceled, Utah caterers offer treats to go, holiday foods and delicious themed meals
Caterers are being creative and trying to adapt, but also hope for more government support.

The December calendars of caterers and event planners are usually filled with weddings, celebrations and work and family holiday gatherings. But with the coronavirus pandemic this year, those calendars are empty.
Since Maxine Turner started her company, Cuisine Unlimited, in 1980, she’s seen the industry in Utah skyrocket especially after the 2002 Winter Olympics and also shrink slightly, after the recession in 2008. Still, nothing prepared her for this year.
