LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - National Salvation Army Week is being recognized locally in East Texas.
Lufkin Mayor Mark Hicks stopped by the Salvation Army of Lufkin Wednesday to read a proclamation made by the City of Lufkin for the week.
Nationally, the week is observed immediately following Mother’s Day in May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, as an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers, donors and program beneficiaries who help the Salvation Army.

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - An East Texas company is investing half-a-million dollars to help a charity with building renovations.
Today Pilgrimâs Pride donated $500,000 to the Salvation Army of Lufkin.
âOur first phase of our renovation we completed our roof and our HVAC units for our facility. So, the second phase that we are looking at working on is inside our building. Weâll be looking at painting, flooring, lighting, and the gym,â said Captain Cavon Phillips.
Pilgrim s is continuing to make good on their promise to support the future of the local community. In November, the company announced they would be investing $685,000 in Lufkin through Pilgrim s Hometown Strong program. Recently, leadership at Pilgrim’s has been working with local leaders to determine where the funds could best help meet immediate and longer-term community needs.

Pilgrim s has announced that in partnership with Kurth Primary School and the Lufkin Independent School District, they will provide $30,000 to purchase 25 picnic tables for outdoor eating areas to improve social distancing capabilities while at school, especially during lunch.

ANGELINA COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - The Salvation Army of Lufkin is reviving the Great East Texas Food Drive. Officials say it was an annual event back 30 years ago.
“It’s a great time of year to have it,” Salvation Army of Lufkin Captain Jenifer Philips said.
The Great East Texas Food Drive started Thursday, as the Salvation Army of Lufkin teams up with schools, churches and businesses for donations of food for the summer months.

The charitable foundation announced on Wednesday that despite COVID-19 related challenges, grants were given to 33 nonprofit organizations across the state of Texas, including in Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Zavalla, Jasper, Newton, Dublin, Vidor, Burkeville, Brenham, Jacksonville, Bryan and Houston, as well as three educational foundations in Lufkin, Carthage and Vidor.
“Undoubtedly, this year has been a struggle, especially for nonprofit organizations. The Brookshire Brothers Charitable Foundation was greatly affected by the COVID-19 crisis, as we were forced to cancel both of our annual charity golf tournaments – our primary fundraiser each year,” said Brookshire Brothers Charitable Foundation Board Chairman Sally Alvis. “However, due to the support and benevolent donations from many of our vendor partners, we are pleased to distribute more than $75,000 in grants this year.”
