Crew members from Sullivan County Emergency Medical Services will be out in force Monday at Walmart on Fort Henry Drive to ring bells and âFill the Boxâ to support the Salvation Army of Greater Kingsport.
âYour emergency workers â EMS, fire, police officers â see the need more than anybody because we actually go into homes when they dial 9-1-1. We are out in the community and see that thereâs hardship,â said Deputy Chief Kevin Marsh. âIf we can make sure every child gets a gift for Christmas, thatâs the ultimate goal for this.â
This year, there are more than 500 local children in the Kingsport Salvation Armyâs Angel Tree program.
The Prince Albert Firefighters Charity made a donation to Santa Anonymous at the fire hall, Friday afternoon.
The Firefighters Charity regularly hosts a toy drive for Santa Anonymous at a Prince Albert Raiders game but was unable to this season due to the WHL season not starting yet.
This year, the charity is donating $1,500 to go directly to the purchasing of Christmas gifts for children in the city.
According to the chair of the Santa Anonymous program Dave Markling, the monetary donation will work just as well.
“Having this donation from the firefighters is extremely helpful, it will help out a lot of kids,” Markling said. “In previous years they have always been very generous and have donated a lot of toys at Raider nights. The charity is still coming through with a monetary donation so we can get what is needed for those who need it the most.”
One of the donated toys for her daughters, Abigail and Lauren, ages four and three at the time, was a life-sized plush reindeer, which Hanvey told them was a gift from Rudolf. That smiling reindeer comes out every Christmas as a reminder never to take for granted the comforts they now have. The 41-year-old Langford mom was so inspired by the generosity and caring shown to her when she was struggling, she’s been volunteering with the Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle campaign ever since. In October, she was hired by the Salvation Army’s Stan Hagen Centre for Families in Victoria, which she said “feels like coming home.”
