(WTOC) - Enthusiasm has had to be the biggest constant in a year of change for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. “This year looks a lot different. We have actually seen a dramatic decline in our volunteers. Last year we had 42 kettles out across the Coastal Empire and this year we’re looking to have about 20.” The challenges for all fundraising during the pandemic are even greater during the season’s in-person fundraising the Salvation Army does - the holiday tradition tinged but not toppled by COVID.

Corning Salvation Army Red Kettles come up short due to COVID-19

The Leader CORNING - The familiar bell-ringing alongside signature Red Kettles on behalf of The Salvation Army is not reaching as many ears this holiday season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign, held from mid-September to Christmas Eve, a key fundraiser for the Christian charity organization, has seen numbers fall sharply during one of the most critical times of the year. “It’s been very difficult,” said Corning Salvation Army Captain Jose Borrero. “We don’t have as many bell-ringing locations compared to past years, and finding volunteers for the Red Kettles has been difficult. Often volunteers either cancel or have not scheduled because of fear of COVID-19.”
