NASA has held a tabletop exercise this week in which planetary defence officials pretend an asteroid is about to hit the Earth in order to see how key players respond.
The hypothetical impact scenario has been run all through this week from April 26 at the 7th International Academy of Astronautics Planetary Defence Conference 2021.
The exercise is being led by NASA s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS).

Throughout the week, CNEOS has been releasing new information each day to conference participants, skipping through months at a time as more and more information about the asteroid is discovered.

This week, NASA will start preparing for the possibility of an asteroid hitting the earth in the future.
Asteroids have hit Earth before in the video above, you can see a 200-year-old crater in Quebec. Another such impact in Mexico wiped out the dinosaurs way back when.
But is there anything we can do now to protect our planet? NASA seems to think so.
An asteroid will hit Earth again someday, this is certain. In an effort to prepare, NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office will conduct a tabletop exercise of how they will handle an approaching asteroid.

Nasa is starting a new impact scenario experiment in the event that a destructive asteroid is discovered heading towards Earth.
The five-day “tabletop exercise”, which commences this week, will allow the space agency – in conjunction with other scientific bodies – to plan how an emergency situation would play out.
The fictional chronology of events begins when astronomers discover a near-Earth object that could put life at risk. More details about the asteroid are revealed as the exercise goes on, to plan for reconnaissance, deflection missions, and ideas to help mitigate the effects of an impact.
