YOUNGSTOWN The city schools are looking at ways to keep students fully engaged in learning this summer after spending a full year being taught online.
The Youngstown City School District will provide a five-week in-person class curriculum available to all students from June 7 to July 9.
The summer school programming also will have some fun activities.
This program will provide all-day classes for students whether they have failed courses through this pandemic year, fallen behind in their classes or want to be able to participate in programs being co-sponsored by the district and community organizations.
The district may provide additional classes through the end of August, even after the five-week program is completed, according to YCSD Chief Executive Officer Justin Jennings.
ATHOL The Athol Royalston Regional School Committee is expected to vote a proposed FY22 school district budget of approximately $26 million when it meets this week. If the budget is ultimately approved, Athol taxpayers will chip in nearly $290,000.

SALEM Salem school officials don’t plan to extend this school year or stage a summer program to catch up students who may have fallen behind during the pandemic.
Instead, Superintendent Sean Kirkland said the plan is to increase opportunities for intervention, extra attention and programming when they’ve got them all back in the buildings starting next fall.
“We’re really focused on providing those resources/instructions throughout the course of the next school year,” he said.
Gov. Mike DeWine asked school districts to devise plans to help students recover or regain what may have been lost due to the up and down nature of the learning process due to Covid-19.
