U S Education Dept to approves final $374M in relief funds to Oregon

Oregon s application for the last of three rounds of federal relief money for K-12 schools was approved by the U.S. Department of Education this week.  Oregon’s American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief, also known as ARP ESSER, application received the stamp of approval, the department announced Thursday, bringing an additional $374 million to schools.  With this final disbursement, the state will have received $1.1 billion to help schools recover and move forward from the impacts of the pandemic.  “Oregon’s ESSER state plan provides opportunities to deepen partnerships while addressing the challenges brought on by COVID-19, poverty, systemic racism, wildfires, loss of power, and the hundreds of ways we struggle to respond to the wholeness of students, families, educators and school leaders,” said Carmen Xiomara Urbina, ODE deputy director, in a news release.

Policies and budget items took up much of the discussion at the meeting. McNeff presented a district strategic plan for the 2020-2025 school years to the board. The plan included strategies to improve the delivery of instruction to students and streamline expectations school-wide. McNeff used the example of students’ behavior in hallways. “We want to come together and create a more consistent way of approaching some of these behaviors,” he said.

Gadsden due $24 million in COVID relief funds, seeks input on how to spend it

About 40 people gathered Tuesday to learn more and to let their ideas be known about how roughly $24 million in American Rescue Plan funds coming to the City of Gadsden should be used. City Planning Director Nick Hall talked about what the money can t be used for paying debt service, legal settlements or judgments, or deposits to pension funds or to rainy day funds or financial reserves, for example  and about the ways it can be used. The eligible uses, by statute are: To respond to the COVID-19 public health emergency or its negative economic impacts; To respond to workers performing essential work during the COVID-19 public health emergency by providing premium pay to those workers;
