A local Duluthian donated $1,000 in boxed meals from Vanilla Bean Restaurant to Emergency Room/COVID nursing staff at both Essentia and St. Luke’s. On Dec. 21, John Goldfine sent boxed meals to both hospitals for workers in the COVID units. His gift was in honor of the University of Minnesota Duluth’s men’s hockey team. Goldfine also encouraged others in the Twin Ports who are looking for ways to give back to consider sending meals to the local hospitals. This donation comes on the heels of another anonymous donation of $500 in meals to Essentia workers earlier this month.

It’s staggering to look back over the last year and the individual and community-wide impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In early January, we were just beginning to hear about a virus, yet unnamed, moving quickly and globally undetected. The virus was identified in China in late December, was in Minnesota by early March, and by mid-March was here in St. Louis County. Pathogens know no borders or geography. Since then, as of mid-December, we have seen more than 11,000 cases reported in St. Louis County residents and, more troubling, 600 individuals hospitalized and 168 deaths.

SUPERIOR, Wis.– It’s been seven years since 11 skydivers played with death after a mid-air collision of two planes over Superior. Those skydivers continue to put that highly publicized moment to good use in the community.
Miracle 11, as they call themselves, is a non-profit that donates money every year to local organizations. This year included a $5,000 check to area food providers including Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, Chum, and the Salvation Army in Superior.
Miracle 11 began after the group licensed go pro video of the collision to TV and other outlets. The money is then distributed back into the community to make lives better. And this year was a pretty important one.
