Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff stopped by Park View beer garden Hook Hall yesterday afternoon. No, he wasn’t enjoying a lager and turkey leg in one of the bar’s themed “Viking huts” (next time). Rather, he was checking out Hook Hall’s efforts to provide free meals and supply kits to struggling restaurant workers, and participating in a roundtable discussion about relief for small businesses and families hard hit by the pandemic.

Years ago, during a former presidential administration, there was a dinner at the White House honoring a prominent patron of the arts. His twenty-something stepsons were seated on either side of a celebrity who was then, and remains now, a household name. She was not pleased. “She took one look at the seating and called over the White House social secretary and said, ‘I do not find this to be appropriate seating. I do not know these people,’” recounts one of the stepsons (as long as no one’s identity is revealed). “The secretary said, ‘These are the sons of the honoree of the evening and if you are not comfortable, we suggest you not stay.’ Of course, she did stay.”

Obviously, today is “Jobs Day.” And with today’s jobs report showing show while it shows some progress, it also shows the long road ahead. Right now, there are 9.5 million fewer jobs than at this time last year. This is a larger jobs hole than at any point in the Great Recession. At this month’s pace, it will take us more than two years to get to pre-pandemic employment levels, and will take even longer at the average pace over the last three months.
Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff made a surprise appearance on a panel discussing the state of women in the United States during the virtual Georgetown Women’s Forum, Feb. 22-26.
As the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, Emhoff is the first second gentleman in the United States. He shared that gender equity is a policy priority for the Biden-Harris Administration during the Feb. 26 panel discussion sponsored by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS).
Challenges Faced
“The challenges facing women today should concern all of us, in every community, because they affect everyone in every community,” said Emhoff, who currently serves on faculty at Georgetown Law.
