When Raymond Felton Gray was sent to prison for life on a murder conviction nearly 50 years ago platform shoes were the fashion rage and Watergate scandal-plagued President Richard Nixon was still in office.
On Tuesday, Gray officially became a free man following a plea deal that allowed him to plead no contest to a lesser murder offense.
Gray, 69, has been incarcerated since May 1973 after he was convicted of first-degree murder for the slaying of a reputed Detroit drug dealer, Ruben Bryant, in a Detroit apartment months earlier.
Gray, who was hoping for an exoneration, has spent 48 years of his life behind Michigan prison walls. He has tried for years to appeal the conviction. He walked out of the Muskegon Correctional Facility Tuesday afternoon a free man.

Raymond Gray has spent nearly 50 years in prison for murder, making him one of Michigan s longest-service inmates. But freedom could possibly be in his future, and not just because of the pandemic.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - After almost 50 years behind bars, Ray Gray will walk out of prison as a free man on Tuesday after a deal was reached between the prosecutor s office and Gray s attorney.
Gray entered a no contest plea to second-degree murder charges for the 1973 death of a man in a Detroit apartment. Gray was 21 when he was sentenced to life in prison and is now 68, one of Michigan s longest-service inmates in custody.

That man was shot and killed by his own nephew, according to police.
The family of 39-year-old Rodne Nalien said goodbye to their loved one at the Memorial Highway Baptist Church in Miami on Saturday.
Nalien was fatally shot in the chest on May 5. 22-year-old Jimmy Desir, Nailen’s nephew, was charged with the crime.
Desir appeared before a judge on Wednesday.
He is facing charges of Second-Degree Murder with a Weapon and is being held in jail without bond.

Officers say witnesses identified Williams as the suspect. He was charged with Second Degree Murder after he turned himself in and has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.

A Regina man was back in court yesterday (WED), on a Second Degree Murder charge, in connection with the death of a Vibank man in March.
25-year-old Anthony Seon remains in custody, with his next appearance set for June 9th.
On the morning of March 7th, police responded to a report of an injured male at a home on the 100-block of St. John Street.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Lawrence Robert Godfrey, was pronounced dead at the scene.
