COASTGUARDS have issued a warning of what to do if people find unexploded ordnance along the coast. Southend Coastguard’s warning comes after an armour piercing shell and several incendiary bombs were discovered at Chalkwell last weekend. The latest discovery comes following more than 80 items of ordnance being found and removed from Southend’s shores in 2020. They say the items can be washed ashore more regularly during the winter season when winds are stronger. A spokesman added: “The Southend and Thames Estuary area was often used by bomber aircraft in the Second World War as a dumping ground for their bomb loads during the war if their primary target was not possible to hit on the way to or back from London.
