Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will meet with an open door to the public. The council will discuss and likely approve a county contract for the Project Phoenix wastewater system.
To avoid confusion, the council will consider changing the name of the Community Services Building to Luckie Park Activity Center, and the new facility at the Project Phoenix site to the Twentynine Palms Community Center.
Two unrelated home fires lit up the Morongo Basin last night.
First, a Landers home that appeared to be inhabited by squatters caught fire shortly before midnight. Fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 56200 block of Lilac Avenue to find heavy smoke and flames from a single-story home, an RV, and multiple cars that were also on fire. The fire was knocked down in approximately 20 minutes and fire crews did not find anyone in the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

At last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting, the council voted to award a design contract to KOA Corporation for a safety median on Highway 62, east of Encelia Avenue. Slated for construction later this year, the 850-foot-long raised median will be a safety mechanism that blocks motorists from making risky left turns from the highway in to the parking lot and vice versa. Motorists heading west will be able to access the shopping center by turning left at the stoplight at Encelia Avenue.

Tonight, the Twentynine Palms City Council will gather to discuss and likely appoint local resident, Chantelle Rodriquez, to the Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC). Rodriquez is an entrepreneur, art educator, and substitute teacher for the Morongo Unified School District.
Up for discussion is the awarded contract to KOA Corporation in the amount of $27,500 for the construction of a raised median in front of the Stater Brother’s Shopping Center on Highway 62.

Last night’s Twentynine Palms City Council meeting, the first of 2021, focused mainly on the sewer rate fee study and rate-setting process for Project Phoenix. On March 1, the city will connect 14 businesses within the Project Phoenix area to the newly installed sewer system, which the city will operate and maintain.
This is a one-year study, so the council will review rates one year after connection. The council voted to distribute informational mailings and set a date for a public protest hearing on February 23.
