Local school districts announce delays due to possibility of black ice Thursday morning

(WBTV) - Multiple local school districts are announcing delays due to the possibility of black ice in some areas Thursday morning.
Caldwell County Schools, Rowan-Salisbury Schools, Newton-Conover Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Iredell-Statesville Schools, Alexander County Schools and Catawba Schools will operate on a two-hour delay on Thursday, Dec. 17.
Several of the school districts say they will continue to monitor travel conditions.

With the pandemic and restrictions over the last 10 months, some organizations have found creative ways to work with youth in the county. Speak Life and Live was unable to host its regular camp this year, so it came up with a unique solution: Zoom camp.
The Statesville nonprofit organization is dedicated to mentoring youth in the area. Instead of its usual summer camp this year, it brought in the participating Iredell-Statesville Schools students online. The camp still focused on reading and writing, with an added element this year of an essay contest to conclude it.
âWith our focus being on literacy and the students losing valuable in-class education, we wanted to make sure we were helping fill the gap in our community,â Executive Director Leslie Morrison stated.

On Saturday, the pair kicked off a toy drive that started with a group of motorcyclists donating toys at STE Powersports, then ended with them carrying others to Blue Collar Cycle Company in Salisbury. The two-county toy drive, the first for the group, was named the Bubâs Ride 2020 in honor of Billsâ late father.
âAbout three weeks ago was when I was asked to put something together,â Bills said as he stood in the lot of STE Powersports on Northside Drive watching bike after bike pull onto the lot. âMy dad was a motorcycle enthusiast and a car enthusiast.
