SUFW Free speech vs Trans rights censorship ruling: Winners & Losers

The extraordinary ruling by the High Court that has forced the Palmerston North City Council into allowing a Feminist group (Stand Up For Women) to meet and discuss the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Bill is as brutal as lemon juice on a schism paper cut. The Palmerston North City Council had banned SUFW from using one of their venues, the Free Speech Union stepped into challenge that and the High Court delivered the kind of legal smack down that would make Harvey Weinstein weep. Controversial group wins court fight to hold public meeting in Palmerston North

David Unwin/Stuff The Palmerston North City Library agreed to host Speak Up For Women’s public meeting, then changed its mind. The council’s decision to stop it “involved a serious failure to recognise the [Bill of Rights Act] right of [Speak Up For Women] and its members”, he said. The group has been criticised as anti-transgender, but it rejects this. Friday’s High Court judgment said the group believed the Government’s proposal to pass the bill into law later this year would have significant implications for women and girls, particularly their rights to single-sex spaces, such as changing rooms, hostels and prisons.
