UPDATED 4 P.M. | Tri-County health departments will begin COVID-19 vaccinations for the 1B+ population starting Friday.
That includes people with cancer, heart problems, COPD, diabetes, obesity, pregnant women, and others with conditions health officials say put them at higher risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes.
The Tri-County health departments didn t expand eligibilty to 1B plus on Feb. 25 with other areas of the state, citing vaccine supply issues as the state earmarked more vaccines for second doses.
Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson says that s no longer an immediate concern. We re now seeing our first dose allocations increase across the board. And we hope that we continue to see them increase, Hendrickson said.
Heart of Illinois United Way sees donations drop during pandemic
Unmute
(WEEK) - The Heart of Illinois United Way announced $9.1 million was raised in 2020, about 11% less than 2019.
President Jennifer Zammuto says the pandemic impacted their efforts, but still over 300 companies did donate to the organization this year. Many of those companies brought in donations straight from employees paychecks. It s been a really challenging year, and it s been wonderful to see so many generous donors step up and see that not everybody could give this year. Many people were out of work or their companies weren t functioning. So, it s been wonderful to see people actually increase their donations this year, said Zammuto.
Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Greater Peoria area turned out to donate to the Heart of Illinois United Way s annual campaign. We raised over $9.1 million, said Heart of Illinois United Way President Jennifer Zammuto. And with COVID and everything that happened over the past year, it s a testament to the generosity and thoughtfulness of this community.
The not-for-profit coalition has expanded its relief efforts during the pandemic, with the 211 Information and Referral Service seeing a 200 percent spike in usage since March of last year, when the first COVID-19 case was reported regionally.
That includes a 60 percent increase in food requests, and 30 percent increase in housing assistance referral requests.
