A coalition of Illinois’ law enforcement groups has issued a 15-point plan that they say is designed to “build trust” and “stronger relationships” with the communities they serve. The list includes priorities, goals, and in some cases defenses of policies. Particularly in the aftermath of the George Floyd killing by police in Minneapolis, there were calls for “defunding the police”, which many activists described as reallocating police funds to things like mental health services and other community improvement efforts. The coalition’s strategy says having access to a social worker or mental health professional would be “very helpful” in some cases. But they add there are difficulties in finding these kinds of workers, particularly in communities with already strained budgets. The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) State Lodge, FOP Labor Council, FOP Chicago Lodge 7, Illinois Sheriffs’ Association and the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police have formed the Illinois Law Enforcement Coalition and have been working on these strategies since summer to improve community safety and enhance the trust.

“City Council threw it out,” she said. “With some of the racial controversies that have been happening throughout the nation, it’s been brought back up again. It’s perfect timing.”
The urgency was sparked by October s police-involved shooting of Tyris Jones, although police officer Dominik McNiece was cleared of wrongdoing. Greer Robinson said the community needs to be involved and there needs to be more transparency.
Greer Robinson has worked as a teacher for more than 30 years with Rockford Public Schools. She also serves as the NAACP State Association’s education chairwoman.
