State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is swarmed after the criminal justice reform bill passes the Illinois House during the lame-duck session for the Illinois House of Representatives on Jan. 13 at the Bank of Springfield Center. Madison County Board members will vote Wednesday on urging Gov. J.B. Pritzker to not sign the legislation.
EDWARDSVILLE Two crime-related resolutions may be considered by the Madison County Board at its regular Wednesday meeting.
One addresses Bi-State Development security in the wake of a highly-publicized murder of an unarmed MetroLink security guard. The other would oppose House Bill 3653, a criminal justice reform bill recently approved in the Illinois General Assembly and awaiting action by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Two new Democratic Senators were sworn in Saturday to fill vacancies in the Illinois General Assembly.
Doris Turner, a former Springfield city councilperson, and Mike Simmons, former policy director for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, are also the two newest members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.
The two Democratic appointments to the Senate follow the recent selections of Adriane Johnson, Cristina Pacione-Zayas and Sally Turner to vacancies in the 30th, 20th and 44th Senate Districts, respectively. They’ve replaced retiring senators through appointments from party officials.
Mike Simmons
Simmons fills the vacancy left by former Sen. Heather Steans, who resigned at the end of January from her seat representing the 7th Senate District on Chicago’s north side.

EDWARDSVILLE Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine is asking the Madison County Board to pass a resolution urging Gov. J.B. Pritzker to veto House Bill 3653, a recently-passed and controversial criminal justice reform bill.
“With this resolution, the county and other officials can speak with a united voice to this critical issue, urging the governor should veto this bill and work with all stakeholders to come up with workable reform that doesn’t make our streets less safe,” Haine said in a press release Tuesday. “I hope the governor listens to our legitimate concerns.”
