Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens told the village board Monday that the body camera mandate in the state s criminal justice reform bill will cost the village at least $300,000.
Among its many provisions, the legislation requires every law enforcement agency in the state to equip its officers with body cameras. Buffalo Grove must have them for sworn officers by Jan. 1, 2025.
Casstevens said he strongly supports body cameras but called the law an unfunded mandate. Police agencies will be scrambling for money to pay for the cameras, with limited funds available through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. The most the village could expect from the agency is $24,000, he added.
WASHINGTON (CN) On Oct. 20, 2014, 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer. Jason Van Dyke had responded to a call to investigate someone allegedly carrying a knife and trying to break into vehicles. He later claimed the Black teen was behaving erratically and that he had PCP in his system, but dashcam footage released a year later revealed that McDonald was walking away when Van Dyke shot him 16 times.
Jason Van Dyke was considered a “problem officer” or rather, experts say, he should’ve been. During his 17-year career, he had received 25 civilian complaints, more than at least 93% of other officers in the Chicago Police Department. Most of the complainants reported him for an excessive use of force.

Bloomington City Manager Tim Gleason says he wants the public to meet the finalists for police chief and he s willing to wait until COVID restrictions ease before the city begins its hiring search.
“I’d prefer to do that in person and I’m hoping I have the ability to do that late spring (or) this summer, but if I don’t, then I’m just going to have to move forward with this,” Gleason said in an interview with WGLT this week.
He said he plans to post the job opening in May. Assistant Chief Greg Scott has been serving as interim police chief since last August, when Dan Donath retired.
April 12, 2021 MACOMB, IL – Earlier this month, Western Illinois University s Emergency Management program collaborated with the Emergency Operation Center Project (ILETSBEI) and the WIU GIS Center to offer two virtual classes to emergency responders and educators.
The mission of the classes was to provide unmanned Aerial System (UAS) certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is mandatory for practitioners and students to be allowed to operate drones and drone-related technology in any professional operations in the area of public safety, from natural disasters, emergencies, to search and rescue.
More than 50 students, from local emergency management agencies, police departments, fire departments, the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, and WIU faculty and students, attended the two classes.
