Wild turkey hunting season in Illinois is underway through May 4, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) said public lands are open for hunting.
Luke Garver, Illinois’ wild turkey project manager at the IDNR, said that in spite of the harsh winter, there are plenty of wild turkeys waiting to be harvested. Unlike last year when public lands were shut down for hunting because of the pandemic, this year IDNR and the governor’s office have given hunters the go-ahead to hunt this year.
“All the public land is back open again, so that should add to the harvest total,” Garver said.

With the spring turkey hunting season opening in Illinois this week, Peoria-area sportsmen and women have taken to the area’s fields and forests.
And it s a busy time for stores in the area that sell hunting supplies. Merle Keefer, owner of Pekin Bass and Bow, estimated that he has sold about 200 turkey permits this year.
“It’s been a pretty typical year,” he added.
David Barth, owner of Pekin Gun and Sporting Goods, said that each year, the store sees a significant increase in business about a month before the start of a spring or fall turkey season. This year, he has noticed that guns and ammunition for hunting seem to be in short supply because of an increased demand for self-defense weapons.

LEWISTOWN Hundreds of students and scouts will visit Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) state parks this spring to get their hands dirty and learn about natural areas stewardship as part of the annual Earth Day in the Parks event series.
Participants will help plant pollinator gardens and other native wildflowers and grasses, transplant tree seedlings, and assist with removing exotic plants to improve habitat.
“Earth Day in the Parks events encourage a sense of ownership among participants in improving natural habitat and helping wildlife in state parks near their homes and schools,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan. “These events are more than just field trips as the students, scouts and adults who participate can return to the parks to see that their projects are worthwhile.”
