A new year means new beginnings for the Rauchfuss Hill State Recreation Area near Golconda.
State Sen. Dale Fowler, R-Harrisburg, said that after being closed for almost a decade, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has announced that the Rauchfuss Hill State Recreation Area will be reopening for camping in spring of 2021.
In the meantime, beginning on Dec. 29, Rauchfuss was scheduled to be open to visitors for picnicking and hiking.
“This is great news for the community, providing another recreational option for visitors and campers,” Fowler said in a news release.
“Rauchfuss Hill State Recreation Area has been under-utilized and neglected for years. It’s past time that we put the time and resources into this local Southern Illinois treasure.”

The governors of Illinois and Michigan have agreed to work jointly to move forward with installing technology at Brandon Road Lock and Dam on the Illinois River to help prevent the spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes.
The technology will include an electronic barrier as well as underwater sounds, an air bubble curtain and a flushing lock in a newly engineered channel designed to prevent the invasive carp from moving while allowing barge passage, according to the office of Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Pritzker and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on January 7 the signing of an intergovernmental agreement between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) that will allow Illinois to use up to $8 million in funds appropriated in 2018 by the Michigan legislature to support pre-construction engineering and desi

Wait until after March 1st to purchase a new hunting or fishing license in Illinois.
I have never been a big outdoors type person. I think it is because I did not grow up around it. I never have been hunting. My parents would not go camping. The only fishing I ever did was at the little pond in my neighborhood growing up.
A few years ago, I took a day trip to go fishing with some friends. I had no idea that I needed a fishing license to participate in the activity. You learn something new everyday I guess.
