Chicago issues mask recommendation as COVID cases increase

Chicago issues mask recommendation as COVID cases increase   Updated 7/30/2021 5:42 PM CHICAGO The city of Chicago on Friday issued a recommendation that everyone over 2 years old wear masks while indoors. The action was taken as the U.S. or Disease Control and Prevention recommended that people, even if vaccinated, wear masks indoors in areas with a high transmission of COVID-19. According to Chicago s health department, the city surpassed 200 new coronavirus cases per day on Friday. The number of new cases in Illinois increased by nearly 50% during the week, compared with the previous week, state health officials said.   Chicago public health commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady says the step advising indoor mask use was made to prevent further spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

As state employees bring masks to work, Illinoisans think of the return of masks everywhere

As state employees bring masks to work, Illinoisans think of the return of masks everywhere SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois state employees went to work with a new mask requirement in place Friday. Although, some are now thinking about the possibility of everyone in Illinois having to wear masks again. In June people celebrated as the state reopened in Phase 5. But now there’s some worry that masks will have to return. After all, no one said they could go away forever. Almost all of the state employees we saw coming out of buildings Friday had their masks on hand for the first day with the office mitigations in place. Some said it just makes sense to keep people safe, vaccinated or not.

COVID-19 cases higher than a year ago, but hospitalizations, deaths down

Updated 7/30/2021 7:05 PM Sixteen months into the pandemic, COVID-19 case counts in Illinois are higher than they were a year ago. Hospitalizations and deaths are lower than at this time last year, however, with health officials crediting the vaccines.   Now, the state is averaging 1,669 new cases a day for the week, Illinois Department of Public Health records show. During the same seven-day period last year, the state was averaging 1,424 new cases each day. The state s seven-day case positivity rate of 4% also is also higher than it was a year ago, when it was 3.8%. But the biggest difference between the end of July this year versus that point last year are the hospitalizations and deaths caused by the virus.
