ROCKTON — State and local officials have found elevated levels of metals in groundwater monitoring wells following the June 14 explosion and fire at Chemtool. The source of the contamination is still unknown, according to a joint news release from Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Department of Public Health and Winnebago County Health Department. As a precaution, public health officials are advising residents in the Blackhawk neighborhood adjacent to the Chemtool property to not use their private well for drinking or cooking. The Illinois EPA identified several metals — antimony, cadmium, chromium and nickel — with increased levels in 16 of 20 monitoring wells sampled. The wells are used to collect data on the direction of groundwater flow, the geology of the area and the extent of the contamination.
