Several regions in southern Illinois, including Region 4, are still seeing elevated positivity rates this week. According to the latest statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health, that region, located near St. Louis, has a positivity rate of 7.6%. Pritzker Has No Plans For Added Mitigations; Local Control Is Focus Of New School Guidelines

His office said Friday it has no plans for added mitigations amid rising virus positivity rates. The wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines has changed the state’s approach for mitigating the virus’ spread statewide and in schools. For school districts, that means suggested rather than required guidance, with an emphasis on local control in imposing mitigations. For the governor’s office, that means there are “no plans” to reinstate some of the mitigation measures and economic shutdowns that were commonplace earlier in the pandemic.

Illinois has the 18th-highest jump in new cases in the nation this week

Updated 7/16/2021 6:45 PM Illinois recorded 67.2% more new COVID-19 cases this week than in the previous seven days, the 18th-highest weekly increase in the nation, according to figures updated Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nationally, this week s COVID-19 cases rose by 63.6%, according to the CDC.   Four states Florida, Texas, California and Missouri account for nearly 50% of all new cases. Florida alone is responsible for one of every five new COVID-19 cases, about 22.1%, CDC data shows. Last week, the state accounted for 17.5% of new cases. California, which reimposed mask mandates last week, accounted for more than 10% of the country s new cases last week, but 8% this week.
