First winners of Illinois vaccine lottery announced, including $1M cash prize winner

Illinois officials said the $1 million cash prize winner is from Chicago.
Additionally, three $150,000 scholarships were awarded to individuals in DeKalb County, suburban Cook County and Chicago.
Illinois officials urge Illinoisans who live in those counties or cities to check their phones and emails regularly to see if they have won.
The Illinois Department of Public Health said it will notify winners by phone or email Thursday afternoon.

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine paid off for a million-dollar lottery winner in Chicago and for three $150,000 scholarship winners, one of them in the suburbs.
The first four winners in a state lottery for COVID-19 vaccine recipients were chosen Thursday.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Illinois Department of Public Health officials announced the winners hometowns, though not their names.
Beside the $1 million prize winner, three $150,000 Bright Start scholarships were awarded to winners between ages 12 and 17 in suburban Cook County, Chicago and DeKalb County.
Those who got at least one vaccination by June 30 automatically were entered in the lottery. Getting vaccinated is your shot to save lives and win big, Pritzker said. Especially with more dangerous variants spreading, getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself from COVID-19. I m excited we re able to offer enticing prizes to reward residents for getting the shot.

Illinois hospitals are reporting the fewest COVID-19 patients in intensive care since state health officials began tracking that figure in early April 2020.
According to Illinois Department of Public Health data released Thursday, just 76 COVID-19 patients were in ICU beds throughout the state.
The drop comes after significant increases in hospitalizations the prior two days.
State health officials also announced 24,482 more doses of COVID-19 vaccine have made it into the arms of Illinois residents and workers.
That brings the total number of doses administered statewide to 12,743,061, according to IDPH figures.
Vaccine providers in Illinois are now averaging 17,227 inoculations a day.

Knox County has administered more than 44,653 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, as of July 5, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
That s up very slightly by 0.82% from the previous week s tally of 44,292 COVID-19 doses administered.
In Knox County, 44% of people living in Knox County are fully vaccinated as of July 5. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers someone fully vaccinated two weeks after they ve been given a single-dose shot (Johnson & Johnson) or a second shot (either Pfizer or Moderna).
Illinois reported 1,392,552 total cases of coronavirus, an increase of 0.10% from the week before.
