Brighton-Bunker Hill Road on Upgrade List

WBGZ Radio 5/26/2021 | By Doug Jenkins - WBGZ Radio We’re learning more about the upgrades planned for the Brighton-Bunker Hill Road. Included in the state’s Multi-Year Plan, the work to reconstruct the road between Fosterburg Road and the Shipman Cutoff is slated to begin sometime next year. That’s according to information from the Illinois Department of Transportation, which indicates almost $3.5-million will be spent on the actual construction, and $280,000 on engineering. The reconstruction will include a grade change where the road crosses a bridge, which will be made longer and wider. Construction is expected to take 6-8 months, and there is a possibility the work will be coordinated with upgrades to Fosterburg Road in that location as well. But that project that includes reconstruction from the Brighton-Bunker Hill Road to the Madison County line is not scheduled until at least 2023.

Roadside mowing resumes across Illinois

IDOT again this year is scheduling mowing to maintain and grow pollinator habitat. In recent years, IDOT has revised its mowing practices to help create and maintain habitat for pollinators, including the endangered rusty patched bumble bee and the monarch butterfly, the official state insect of Illinois. “We are committed to protecting the environment in the work we do every day, but ask for the public’s cooperation by giving workers their distance,” said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “By combining well-defined vegetation management with mowing cycles that preserve sightlines and maximize safety, we can make a positive impact today and for future generations.”

IDOT worker injured in hit-and-run Tuesday morning

An Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) worker was hospitalized Tuesday morning after being hit by a car just after 7:30 in Southern Illinois. According to Illinois State Police (ISP), the employees were patching holes on Main St. in Fairfield, about three and a half hours south of Peoria. The employee was climbing onto an end loader, according to ISP, when he was hit by someone driving a white Chevy Cruze. The driver continued on without stopping, and the employee was considered to have minor injuries. IDOT posted a reminder to their Twitter Tuesday afternoon, telling drivers to keep their safety in mind.
