The House committee passed HB 2615 in March and is expected to be heard by the house floor for a vote later this month. The Senate’s subcommittee on public health heard its sister bill, SB 2007, just this week.
The bill would add buttercream icing to the list of approved cottage food products that have been banned because of its dairy-based recipe. The act also would expand the market for cottage food license holders, which is currently limited solely to farmers markets.
The online site aimed at helping operators maneuver the various regulations governing the cottage food industry gave Illinois a “restricted” ranking in 2020 based on current state law that limits sales to farmers markets. Illinois shared this lowest ranking with Oklahoma and Rhode Island.
