Nominations are open for the inaugural Paul Simon-Jim Edgar Statesmanship Award, which will honor an Illinois elected official who has displayed a pattern of public service characterized by vision, courage, compassion, effectiveness, civility and bipartisanship. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute partnered with former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar this past November to launch the award, which is named for the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, a Democrat, and Edgar, a Republican. SIU to honor May 2021 graduates, all 2020 graduates May 7-9 Tactical Navigation by Pete Rosenbery CARBONDALE, Ill. The academic achievements of about 2,000 Southern Illinois University Carbondale graduates will be celebrated in person during outdoor commencement ceremonies at Saluki Stadium, Friday through Sunday, May 7-9. Following protocols of the Restore Illinois Plan, social distancing will be required for all participants, guests and staff. Ceremonies over the three-day celebration for undergraduate, graduate and professional students will be for spring 2021 graduates along with 2020 graduates. All 2020 graduates will be feted in ceremonies on May 9, except for the SIU School of Law, which will recognize 2020 graduates with this spring’s class on May 7.

(KFVS) - Southern Illinois University Carbondale will celebrate the achievements of eight individuals with honorary degrees and distinguished service awards during commencement ceremonies May 7-9 at Saluki Stadium. The honorees are: Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, will receive an honorary Doctor of Community Health degree during ceremonies honoring College of Applied Sciences and Arts graduates at noon May 8.

St Louis-Area Camps Get Ready For Another Pandemic Summer

Gateway Region YMCA Gateway Region YMCA camp counselor Sydney King lines up with her campers in July. The local YMCA has not stopped offering afterschool care during the pandemic, instilling safety measures such as mandatory mask wearing, maintaining social distancing and keeping activity group sizes small. Summer break is around the corner for many children, and St. Louis-area summer camp operators are again deciding whether to run in-person programs or keep them virtual. The Gateway Region YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club of St. Louis will hold in-person summer camp programs once again. Others, such as St. Louis University’s summer programs for K-12 students, will be held entirely online.
