Businesses with diverse owners may have better access to vendor contracts under a new formula created by the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS).
Every day the state of Illinois buys goods and services from outside vendors. From furniture to IT services, from contractor jobs to medical supplies, business owners bid for the opportunity to land lucrative state contracts. For a number of years, the Chicago Urban League has worked to get minority business owners a larger share of state contracts – more representative of the black population in the state, which is just under 15%.

A $75,000 gift from the Illinois Farm Bureau has funded the purchase of new high-tech equipment for the benefit of agricultural students.
Chris Magnuson, executive director of the Illinois Farm Bureau, told the Illinois Radio Network the Farm Bureau wants young farmers to have hands-on experience using 21st Century technology.
“We benefit when the best and the brightest go into fields of agriculture,” Magnuson said. “The Farm Bureau wants to encourage that by investing in our own industry.”
Illinois is one of the top three agricultural states in the country. Magnuson said the Farm Bureau invests in all four of Illinois’ agricultural schools: Illinois State, University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University.
