Illinois program scrubs student loans for people who buy a home By Audrey Conklin The Illinois Housing Development Authority’s SmartBuy program helps student loan borrowers launched in December, will pay eligible Illinois residents 15% up to $40,000 of the purchase price of a new home to help pay off their student loan debt. SmartBuy will also give between 500 and 1,000 new homeowners with incomes of less than $109,000 a 30-year, fixed-rate first mortgage with a deferred $5,000 for down payment or closing cost assistance, according to a press release from the IHDA. The IHDA did not immediately respond to inquiries from FOX Business.

The IHDA aims to distribute over $500 million in rental and mortgage assistance for 2021. The housing crisis of 2008 taught us that it is cheaper and more cost-effective to keep people in their homes, Carrillo told Illinois Radio Network.
