The maximum youth sentence for manslaughter is three years. Manslaughter sentences for adults generally fall between four and 12 years.
In 2019, Judge Robert Lane sentenced the man to a nine-year adult prison term. The appeal court judges reduced it to seven years, ruling Lane erred in his analysis by failing to consider the offender’s remorse and positive performance while on remand, and by overemphasizing a comparison to the sentences of the man’s co-accused.
