Never give in - The story of Tommy McCarthy

Tommy McCarthy is living proof that persistence pays off in the end, writes Paul Wheeler BEFORE he was the European cruiserweight champion, Tommy McCarthy was a wide-eyed 11-year-old putting on boxing gloves for the first time under the tutelage of Patsy McAllister at Oliver Plunkett ABC in West Belfast. Born to a mother in London and a father in Belfast, McCarthy was back and forth between the two cities from the age of about six weeks. After his mother sadly passed away when he was seven years old, he lived in Belfast permanently with his paternal grandparents. And it was his grandfather’s words of advice that led him to where he is today.

24th December 2020 The East Antrim Boat Club dinghy fleet prepare for a start at Larne Harbour and in the background (left) is MPI Resolution, the world s first purpose-built vessel for installing offshore wind turbines currently based in Larne Seventeen single-handers took advantage of a favourable day on Sunday last (20th) to hold a Christmas Regatta at East Antrim Boat Club on Larne Lough before the shut down in Northern Ireland on Boxing Day. The fleet consisted of two Optimists and a Topper racing together, nine Laser Radials, four Laser 4.7s and an Aero starting as a group. The fleet raced in Larne Harbour, currently the base for MPI Resolution, the world s first purpose-built vessel for installing offshore wind turbines that is pictured top and as Afloat reported previously here.

EUBC President Falcinelli looks forward to era of reforms under Kremlev Monday, 21 December 2020 European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) President Franco Falcinelli has looked forward to an era of reforms under newly-elected International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Umar Kremlev. Kremlev was appointed AIBA President earlier this month during a virtual Extraordinary Congress.  In his newsletter, Falcinelli acknowledged the difficult task facing Kremlev and thanked Interim AIBA President Mohamed Moustahsane for his time in charge of the embattled governing body.  Falcinelli also recognised the efforts of the two other European Presidential candidates - Suleyman Mikayilov of Azerbaijan and Boris van der Vorst of The Netherlands.

Jude is one of ten youngsters from across the UK who have been handed a huge boost in their ambitions to become top class dinghy sailors thanks to a national programme helping young talent progress in the sport.
