Lee County Library System expands Early Literacy offerings for families Published: January 29, 2021 9:51 AM EST The Lee County Library System has enhanced its early literacy services with the redesign and relaunch of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program and the addition of a website section specifically for families with young children. These efforts come as educators nationwide look for opportunities to reach young children before they enter kindergarten. Hayward (Calif.) Public Library As library director, Addleman has navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with inspiring optimism and extensive expertise. Her efforts include removing barriers to online library card registration, distributing technology to community members in need, and purchasing a bookmobile to distribute resources throughout the area. Addleman came to Hayward Public Library in January 2019 as director of library services during a time of great transition for the department, including construction of a new building that was already a year behind schedule. Unfortunately, six months after the new library finally opened, it had to close again because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “In what was a dark time for many, Addleman’s optimism and enthusiasm shone through,” nominators wrote. She swiftly leveraged resources to purchase a bookmobile for the community.

Caregivers and parents can get access to literacy tips through this York County program. (WYDaily/ Courtesy of York County) The York County Public Library is starting a new program called “Baby Bookworms,” a six-week Zoom session for caregivers with literacy, parenting tips and other resources. The event is geared for parents and caregivers of infants ––from birth to fifteen months. You can register here.  “Parenting is tough and even more so for parents of little ones,” said Michelle Paxton, Youth Services Coordinator, in a prepared statement. “COVID-19 has added another layer of stress because parents and caregivers are unable to meet in person with other adults in similar situations to find support and advice.”
