On Monday, 10 May 2021, 7amleh - The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media launched its annual report on Palestinian digital rights, entitled “#Hashtag Palestine 2020”. The report details violations that took place in 2020, and specifically during the coronavirus pandemic, by authorities, technology companies and the Palestinian society itself.
In 2020, 7amleh reported that the Israeli authority expanded its surveillance of Palestinians, and approved emergency regulations and the use of applications that violated people’s rights to privacy. On the other hand, the Palestinian Authority passed a new emergency law in response to the pandemic, that prohibited anyone other than legal authorities from spreading news about the pandemic, and arrested over 20 Palestinians in connection to their posts on social media. The IHRA then appended examples as “illustrations”, with which to guide its work. These have never been part of the official IHRA definition.
These examples focus largely on the idea that any criticism of Israel is antisemitic. This would make recent publications by Jewish Zionist writers and Israeli human rights organisations “antisemitic”.

The New York Times titled: “I no longer believe in a Jewish state”. The Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem issued a paper in January that declared Israel to be an apartheid state.
The IHRA definition is innocuous, but it is imprecise and useless for legal purposes. Indeed, one of its authors, Kenneth Stern, has strongly criticised its weaponisation to suppress the free speech of Palestinians.

Last week, United with Israel joined Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs, together with other organizations and top social media influencers, on a visit to one of the six Hezbollah terror tunnels discovered and neutralized by IDF forces between 2018 and 2019.

Biden administration’s first signals on the Middle East
The new Joe Biden administration has begun issuing policy statements about the Middle East and the clear signs are that it will do nothing to try to revive the so-called peace process, and it’s not going to try all that hard on the Iran deal either. Biden obviously has a lot on his plate. But it appears he has told his State Department staff, I’m not spending any political capital to fight the Israel lobby, or the centrist branch of it that wields influence inside the Democratic Party.
Yesterday acting-US ambassador Richard Mills spoke to the United Nations Security Council and said Yes we’re all for the two-state solution (because it ensures “Israel’s future as a democratic and Jewish state, while upholding the Palestinian people’s legitimate aspirations”– whatever that means) but two states won’t happen any time soon so, We are for a managed conflict. No negotiations.
