Massive US-Israel weapons sale approved by Biden administration

Most of the proposed sale is for joint direct attack munitions, known by the acronym JDAMS, which transform so-called dumb bombs into precision guided missiles. Israel, which has purchased JDAMS in the past, has said they are used to try and avoid hitting civilians during their air strikes on densely populated Gaza. The Biden administration s notification to Congress, first reported by The Washington Post, triggered a 15-day review process which should end later this week. While pushing for an immediate cease-fire, the U.S. administration backs Israel s right to defend itself from attacks by Hamas. There is uniform support for the position among congressional Republicans, but a growing number of progressive Democrats in Congress is questioning Washington’s support of conservative Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

US senators call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza as Biden pushes behind the scenes

“To prevent any further loss of civilian life and to prevent further escalation of conflict in Israel and the Palestinian territories, we urge an immediate ceasefire,” the statement said. Its signatories include the prominent senators Amy Klobuchar, Tammy Duckworth, Bernie Sanders, Chris Murphy, Tim Kaine and Elizabeth Warren. Mr Murphy also issued a separate statement with Republican Todd Young in which they called for a “quick ceasefire”. The Biden administration has blocked UN efforts to issue a statement on a possible truce. On Friday, 12 Jewish members of Congress were the first to call on President Joe Biden’s administration to pursue a truce.

Biden expresses support for Israel-Hamas cease fire

The United States, Israel’s top ally, also blocked for a third time Monday what would have been a unanimous statement by the 15-nation U.N. Security Council expressing “grave concern” over the intensifying Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the loss of civilian lives. The final U.S. rejection Monday killed the Security Council statement, at least for now. White House press secretary Jen Psaki and national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States was focusing instead on “quiet, intensive diplomacy.” The U.S. administration’s publicly tempered response comes despite calls from Security Council partners, some Democrats and others for Biden’ and other international leaders to wade more deeply into diplomacy to end the worst Israel-Palestinian violence in years and revive long-collapsed mediation for genuine peace there.
