Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested shutting down social media in Israel during the initial days of the recent operation in the Gaza Strip.
The report about the prime minister’s suggestion was published Sunday in the Walla website and later in the day Haaretz’s Jonathan Lis and Netael Bandel added that the idea came directly from Netanyahu. They reported that Netanyahu raised it in at least two different meetings. It was rejected due to opposition by the attorney general, the Shin Bet security service and other defense officials.
The app is meant to help soldiers fill out their attendance forms. But it’s not an official army app, and could therefore result in a massive leak in soldiers’ personal information

Facebook blocked the WhatsApp accounts of at least 30 people in Israel this week, including that of the leader of a far-right Jewish extremist group called Lehava and the wife of a Khanist lawmaker, who is now taking legal action the social media platform. Suggestions were made that the state was behind this move, but Haaretz has learned that no official request to block accounts was made by the authorities to Facebook, raising the question: Why were the accounts blocked?
Blocking WhatsApp accounts is a rare move undertaken by Facebook. The reason for this is that the content flowing through its software is encrypted, meaning that the company has no access to it and cannot know whether messages’ content breach its regulations.
