The year 2020 is not one we will soon forget, as the COVID-19 pandemic made its way across the globe at blistering speed and caused devastating losses.
It’s been a long 12 months, but 2020 had some remarkable moments (and thankfully, 2021 is just around the corner).
In Israel, amid government restrictions that led to three nationwide lockdowns (one of which started this week,) Israelis danced on balconies and created fashion masks, saw Gal Gadot become Wonder Woman again, and normalized relations with the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. They watched an Israeli rhythmic gymnast win the European Championships for the first time in history and an Israeli basketball player join the NBA. (January 6, 2021 / JNS) Israeli President Reuven Rivlin was on hand at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon on Tuesday to meet with the first person to receive Israel’s BriLife COVID-19 vaccine as part of its expanded phase II trial.

While Israel has already vaccinated 1.5 million people with Pfizer’s BioNTech formula, the locally developed vaccine entered phase two of its clinical trials.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin was on hand at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon on Tuesday to meet with the first person to receive Israel’s BriLife COVID-19 vaccine as part of its expanded phase II trial.
While Israel is already in the midst of a nationwide vaccination campaign, having administered the first dose of Pfizer’s BioNTech vaccine to nearly 1.5 million Israelis in the past two weeks and with millions of doses of Moderna’s vaccine on the way Rivlin stressed the importance of the Israel Institute for Biological Research’s locally developed vaccine.
Israel has given most Covid-19 vaccines per capita
Data shows that Israel was among fastest in rolling out the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to healthcare workers and people over 60.

Israel is leading the world in getting its citizens vaccinated against Covid-19.
As of December 22, Israel had administered the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine to 83 citizens out of every 10,000. In second place was the United Kingdom, at 74 out of 10,000. The United States was a distant third, with 30 out of every 10,000 people vaccinated.
