S. Korea, Iran agree to continue talks on ship seizure, frozen assets after little progress
SEOUL, Jan. 13 (Yonhap) South Korea and Iran will continue talks for the early release of a seized Korean ship and to resolve the issue of Tehran s frozen assets here, Seoul officials said Wednesday, amid little signs of progress on those issues in their recent high-level meetings in Tehran.
A South Korean delegation, led by First Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun, wrapped up its three-day visit to Tehran on Tuesday (Tehran time) as tensions have flared up after Iran s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps seized a South Korean oil tanker in the Persian Gulf on Jan. 4.

Griffiths held talks with Saudi Arabia’s deputy defense minister to discuss developments in Yemen
The UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said Tuesday that the Saudi commitment to reaching a political settlement to the Yemeni conflict was crucial.
On Monday, Griffith held talks in Riyadh with Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman to discuss the situation in war-torn Yemen.
“We discussed ways to overcome obstacles facing prospects for peace in Yemen,” Griffiths said on Twitter. He stressed on the importance of the commitment of the kingdom and the region to reach “a negotiated, Yemeni-led, inclusive political settlement” towards ending the conflict “comprehensively and sustainably”.

The prospects for the early release of a South Korean oil tanker and its sailors seized by Iran appeared murky Tuesday, as Tehran s emphasis on a judicial process over the vessel s alleged oil pollution has dampened Seoul s hope for a diplomatic solution.
During his visit to Tehran since Sunday, Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun met with senior Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Kamal Kharrazi, the head of Iran s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, and his counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

A senior Iranian diplomat has claimed that Tehran s financial assets in Korea remain frozen more due to Seoul s lack of political will than U.S. sanctions, an Iranian media outlet reported Monday, amid tensions over Iran s seizure of a South Korean oil tanker.
Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the claim during Sunday s talks with Seoul s Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun, saying the freezing of the assets means giving in to the U.S. excessive demands, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
