This year s theme is Wetlands and Water It marks the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The Philippines is a Contracting Party in the only international treaty focused on the wise use and conservation of wetlands. As a Contracting Party, the Philippines is committed to adopt and implement laws, policies and plans to promote the wise use of wetlands.

ON World Wetlands Day, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) calls upon policymakers, local and central government to take concerted and coordinated efforts to develop and implement action plans to stop the ongoing degradation of wetlands and protect, preserve and restore them. World Wetlands Day, which is commemorated every year on 2 February, aims to raise global awareness on the vital importance of wetlands for human beings, flora and fauna and our planet as a whole. World Wetlands Day is also an occasion to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands, the “Ramsar Convention” on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The Ramsar Convention seeks to protect and preserve wetlands. Zimbabwe is a party to this Convention and in terms of which has designated 7 ‘Ramsar sites’ of wetlands of international importance.

A total of 125 pine siskins were sighted during the Christmas Bird Count at Cheyenne Bottoms. A mild start to winter would normally bring a flock of bird watchers to Cheyenne Bottoms and the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge for the annual Christmas Bird Count – but this was no normal year. Although humans have had to forego social gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, the birds have not. A record 97 species were documented at the Bottoms – a number matched at Quivira.

Couple highlight use of natural mangrove dye

A tub of mangrove tree bark that is being soaked in salted water for a period of time to extract its natural colour. PONTIAN: A couple of graphic designers are using their handmade crafts, made with natural mangrove dye, to shed light on the beauty of the coastal trees. Jo Wong Seok Wei, 47, and her husband Lim Beng Chee, 53, started exploring the use of natural dye from mangrove barks about two years ago and have since produced their own line of natural fashion and lifestyle products. Beng Chee recalled that about two years ago, they attended many workshops in Kuala Lumpur, Perak and even went to Thailand to learn about natural dyeing techniques.
