Years ago, I overheard a family passing a bell-ringing Santa during a Christmas shopping trip. The kid wanted some spare change to drop in the kettle. The dad said no.
“I don’t have any change to give to strangers,” he said. “But maybe we can give something to your grandma. To her, $20 is a big deal. And 50 bucks would make a difference for her, at least for a month.”

The San Antonio Food Bank, Palo Alto College, Goodwill Industries and other local institutions have received gifts totaling tens of millions of dollars from author and billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.

Author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott (many know her as the former wife of Amazon CEO and billionaire Jeff Bezos) has donated more than $4 billion to charities across the nation including in Austin and Central Texas. In a post on Medium, Scott notes that she and her advisers have disbursed some $4,158,500,000 in gifts to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. over the last four months. This is in effort to “accelerate my 2020 giving through immediate support to people suffering the economic effects of the crisis,” Scott writes.
