Summit County vaccine start rate pulls ahead of Ohio s statewide rate

Summit had trailed the state starter vaccine rate for weeks, and continues to slightly lag behind the state rate of vaccine completions. Here s a look at local and state COVID-19 data provided Friday by the Ohio Department of Health and area hospitals; the state updates death totals on Tuesdays and Fridays: Summit County: 43,507  total cases (111 new), 3,763 hospitalizations (unchanged);900 deaths (three new). 168,105 people (31% of the county s population) have begun receiving the vaccine;  90,048 (16.6%) are fully vaccinated. Summit County hospitals on Friday reported treating 77 COVID-19 patients, two more than Thursday s count and the highest total since the March 1 count of 92. By hospital system, Friday s counts were 38 at Summa Health, 32 at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, five at Western Reserve Hospital and two at Akron Children s Hospital.

On Saturday, April 3, a mass vaccination site at the Summit County Fairgrounds will finally open. County health officials say the site is currently scheduled to be open for two months, for 3-4 days per week. Officials say the site will have the ability to accommodate up to 5,000 appointments per week, depending on the number of vaccine doses given by the state.
